Biological Nitrogen Fixation and Nitrogen Accumulation in Peatlands

نویسندگان

چکیده

Peatlands cover about 3% of the Earth’s surface and are regarded as a vital carbon (C) pool sink. The formation peatland is supported by continuously supplied nitrogen (N) but sources this N remain unclear. Here, we first review stocks rate they accumulate in peatlands, then present N, especially through biological fixation (BNF). We found that global peatlands store 5.9–25.9 Gt N. In past millennia, northern have lower accumulated than tropical undisturbed peatlands. BNF approximately 1.9 ± 2.7 g m ?2 yr ?1 higher deposition, 0.5 0.4 . For observation has hardly been reported yet needs further investigation. This provides broad picture cycling suggests there large uncertainties, due to limited observations fluxes inflow outflow runoff. Therefore, call for more efforts contributing field modelling budget

Biological nitrogen fixation, 1924-1974.

Crop rotation was practiced in ancient times by alternating the use of leguminous and nonleguminous plants. The basis for the benefit derived from this practice was not understood, but it was observed empirically that crops were improved and the condition of the soil was maintained better with rotation than by continual cropping with nonleguminous plants. Rotation was recognized as good husband...

“Biological Nitrogen Fixation” Book Summary

Biological nitrogen fixation is a very valuable alternative to nitrogen fertilizer. This process will be discussed in the “Biological Nitrogen Fixation” book. A wide array of free-living and associative nitrogen fixing organisms (diazotrophs) will be covered. The most extensively studied and applied example of biological nitrogen fixation is the symbiotic interaction between nitrogen fixing “rh...

Mechanism of Biological Nitrogen Fixation

Recently Phelps and Wilson (1) reported the occurrence of hydrogenase, the enzyme which activates molecular hydrogen, in nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Because HZ specifically inhibits nitrogen fixation by red clover plants inoculated with Rhizobium trijolii as well as by Azotobacter (2,3), possession of hydrogenase by these organisms may be more than merely fortuitous. The possibility must be consi...

New Perspectives in Biological Nitrogen Fixation Research

Nitrogen fixation, along with photosynthesis is the basis of all life on Earth. Current understanding suggests that no plant fixes its own nitrogen. Some plants (mainly legumes) fix nitrogen via symbiotic anaerobic microorganisms (mainly rhizobia). The nature of biological nitrogen fixation is that the dinitrogenase catalyzes the reaction splitting triple bond inert atmospheric nitrogen (N2) in...
